AI calorie counter. Describe the meal, skip the database.

Traditional calorie counters require you to search a food database — which fails for restaurant meals, homemade food, and anything with multiple ingredients. Forge AI uses AI to estimate calories from a plain-language description of what you ate.

How it works

"Large chicken burrito bowl with rice, black beans, guac, and sour cream"
→ ~920 kcal · 58g protein · 97g carbs · 31g fat
"Salmon teriyaki with white rice and edamame, restaurant portion"
→ ~720 kcal · 52g protein · 68g carbs · 18g fat
"Homemade pasta with ground beef meat sauce, two bowls"
→ ~840 kcal · 44g protein · 88g carbs · 30g fat
"Protein shake with 2 scoops whey, 1 cup oat milk, banana"
→ ~490 kcal · 52g protein · 58g carbs · 8g fat

Why AI works better than a food database for most meals

Food databases are built for packaged products with nutritional labels. They break down for restaurant meals (no entry for your specific order), homemade food (no entry for grandma's recipe), and mixed dishes (you'd need to log every ingredient separately).

AI estimation works from food composition knowledge — the same way a registered dietitian would estimate a meal's macros just by looking at the plate. It handles complexity, context, and portion inference that a keyword search never could.

When to use the barcode scanner instead

Forge AI also includes a barcode scanner for packaged foods where exact nutrition data is available and important — protein bars, Greek yogurt, cereals. For these, the label is more accurate than an estimate. For everything else, the AI logger is faster and accurate enough for consistent tracking.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI calorie counter free?
Yes. Forge AI is free to try during beta and no account required.

How accurate is AI calorie estimation?
For common meals, estimates are typically within 10–15% of actual values. This is accurate enough for consistent tracking — especially compared to eyeballing portions or skipping the log entirely. For packaged foods, the barcode scanner gives exact figures.

What types of meals can I describe?
Anything: restaurant orders, home-cooked meals, snacks, drinks, meal prep containers. The AI handles multi-ingredient dishes, estimated portions, and cuisine from any culture.

Does it track macros too, not just calories?
Yes. Every estimate includes protein, carbs, and fat alongside calories. Forge AI also sets personalized macro targets based on your goal and tracks them throughout the day.
